The more things stay the same ... they change

Friends,

As all of you who are regular readers have noticed and likely those few who check in occasionally I have been "away from my post" (that works on two levels) for the last several months.

Call it life, call it lazy, call it whatever you would like, I have not been here and I apologize for that. It has been a raucous summer on a variety of fronts and throughout I have missed writing on the variety of topics I do, all through the eyes of a referee.

With that lets get started again ... but first a note of caution ... for any who have not heard, I have the honor of now being the Massachusetts State Director of Assessment so my posting may take a slightly less sharp tone at time on some things ... or not based on the particular topic.

One addition I have made however is the "Assessors Tableau." Where I will throw out topics, articles, notes, quotes, or whatever to get my fellow assessors (from around the world) thinking, noting of course that the real "front line" assessors are the referees themselves.

With that we are off again ... however I anticipate at a slower pace as I am still on the edges of crazy and don't see that slowing down anytime soon.

Thanks for reading!

Programming Note

Friends,

It has been a trying couple of weeks with the loss of Madame X's mother who succumb to Alzheimer's Disease and the accompanying ceremonies for such an event.

As fate has it I will also be traveling for a period of time and generally unplugged.

Have no fear however as the MLS Referee Strike has "graced" the opening of the MLS season this year, and I certainly have more than a few things to say about it.

Also, as we tick closer to Brazil 2014 we are starting to see a host of security concerns coming from FIFA, as they start to already place the blame for any bad event on the host nation.

Oh yes folks, the snow is melting and we are just getting started to kick off another season in the US ... and a World Cup in Brazil.

Stay tuned!

Programming Note

Friends,

Over the next week or so I will be off finishing my training for an upcoming mountain pass race.

Remember that training is a year round proposition with any sport, and while my similarly titled note on February 23rd this year focused on early season fitness, now is the time to be focused on maintenance fitness, or even in my case (and maybe yours) another build phase for upcoming challenges.

Gone are the days of getting fit by refereeing. It is now imperative to get fit to referee.

While there are tales of folks who "work themselves into form" by competing, if you expect to excel, you need to be fit from the start.

Please enjoy the archives to the right, and we'll back at it again!

My Home Field

I can remember when I was very young and growing up in Eastern Massachusetts. It was a great time in my life because I had the ability to eat, breathe, sleep, and do all things soccer. I lived in a soccer family where each and every one of us were involved in The Game in some way.

At that time I was both a player and referee, and spent nearly every daylight hour on or near a soccer field. I can remember getting up Saturday mornings in the spring and going with my dad to line fields for the day's matches.

I knew every blade of grass, every mark, every anthill on those fields. I knew when the grass was going to be cut, and who was cutting it. I even cut it a few times myself when the grounds keeper could not get out in time during the week. I made patterns in the penalty area and center circle just like I had seen on TV. "THIS is how they do it ..." I would yell to my dad over the mower as he held is hands high in a gesture as to say "What are you doing?"

On Sunday I would play a match, then generally change in the car and run lines for the rest of the day, finishing off with the toughest matches of the weekend. The dreaded Boys U-19. I learned so much.

I did this for weeks in a row, and year after year. Those fields I came to think of as "my home field." It was where I refereed my first match, played my first game, and learned how to put the perfect markings down. It was glorious.

Same is true today with the roads around my town. I have ridden 1000's of miles over them and know the flats, rises, bumps, pot holes and what power I can pull in what stretch. I have ridden them almost every day for a few years now, and know them well.

We don't always get to stay at our home field, and have to move on to other things in life. While sad in a way, it is also necessary to grow.

I remember by first time refereeing an "away game" almost 20 minutes away, or my first night match at the State Championships ... and how things seems to be more exciting "under the lights."

I remember too my first bike races away from my home roads, or training far, far away.

That time has come for Kicking Back too.

For the next few weeks, I will be away moving and setting up shop in a new location.

It has been a very busy time ... and promises to be exciting, and a little scary as where I am going is totally unfamiliar to me.

Have no fear, we will be back with a vengeance after a short break tackling the fun, silly, and surreal.

During my break, please take some time and peruse the archives as right ... in looking at the work we have done over the last few years, there are some real gems in there.

Enjoy!

... and thanks for reading!

I will be out of pocket for the next few days so I will not be able to write regularly. I invite you to read the archives at right.

Thanks for reading, and we'll be back at it in a few days.

Finally, just to reflect for a second on yesterday's post ... do we really want an MLS match to look like this?

Sadly Gillette Stadium may soon unless things get better.

Programming Note - Holiday Version

Friends,

Over the next couple of weeks I will be in studio creating audio for "Two Minute Tips." If all goes according to plan, you will start to see a weekly audio episode starting January 7th, 2012 here and in iTunes.

Each episode will be two minutes in length and is intended to be those little nuggets you get after your formal assessment that can help you in the right scenario.

To be sure, even the most beautiful pearl of wisdom starts as a grain of sand or other irritant, so bear with me as we find our way together.

In all events, enjoy your holiday season, and I will see you all on the other side of the break.

Thanks for reading,
PK

I am 'outta here ...

... for about a week on business.

I will be in Asia, so in the spirit I have been catching up on the Hong Kong Referee blog. It continues to be a very precise rendering of refereeing topics, and does not disappoint.

Take a peek ... it's worth it.

Will be back next week with more ... but who knows JAFO and Nigel may just jump in as well.

Thanks for reading,

Welcome Back

Well friends, it has been a crazy few weeks. Between finishing my vacation and having a bunch of stories coming out of that, to the nightmare of hurricane Irene and the destruction it left (including some to one of my computers), and a couple of personal bumps in the road has made my recent time ... lets say ... interesting.

Before I start with a substantive post however, with everything that has gone on recently, it was a humbling reminder of how small and fragile we are as a species.

A very interesting reminder of this can also be found here, and below:

None the less, I am here, mostly whole, and back at it just in time, or maybe a bit late, for the start of the fall season. So enough of the small talk, let's get to it.

As soon as we can, well be back at it again.

Thanks for reading.

US Referee Connection. Some interesting stuff worth checking out.
Pro Referee. Really good site. Run by pros. Period.

As always, JAFO and Nigel may jump in and sprinkle their wisdom on the topic du jour, however will be engaged no doubt in their own right. I will enjoy reading any posts should they do so, on my return.

Good week to all, and thanks for reading.

Once more unto the breech, dear friends, once more ...

Friends,

So as summer cycling is in full swing and the TdF is reaching its apex, I find myself ready to tackle yet another ride. This time it is the Memory Ride in central Massachusetts.

With it however I will be away for a couple of days as I travel, compete, and recover from the event (especially with the heat), but promise to be back at it early next week with new material. First on the docket is the follow up to Multiple Guess ... . So if you were interested, as many seemed to be, stand by for my interpretation.

Good weekend to all, and enjoy the grand finale of the Tour moving through Paris on Sunday.

Dear followers of Kicking Back:
Over the next few days I am going to be traveling and relatively "unplugged" (one might say "kicking back" - sorry). During that time I do not have any posts "in the can" ready to go (despite having lots of ideas), and will not be near any place that I will be able to post.

To that end, I leave you all to your wares and what looks like in this part of the US to be a very nice long weekend. I implore you all to get out and play/coach/referee/assess this weekend, as it looks like a beauty.

As always, JAFO and Nigel may jump in and sprinkle their wisdom on the topic du jour, however will be engaged no doubt in their own right. I will enjoy reading any posts should they do so, on my return.

Good weekend to all and thanks for reading.
